For our first Mood Wine event we've selected three big reds! I will be talking about these wines periodically: Writing
recipes, talking about how they enhance certain culinary and social
experiences, and hopefully telling some of your wine stories once you've had a chance to enjoy them...
TIME TO JUMP FOR MORE INFO...
Jake and I are both Pinot Noir lovers; we both especially love Oregon Pinots and belong to WillaKenzie Estate's wine club. WillaKenzie is a beautiful property in Yamhill, Oregon... this is what they say on their website:
"WillaKenzie Estate is a dramatic hillside winery featuring vineyards, pastures and forest located in Yamhill County, about 35 miles from Portland, Oregon."
So this past week, we decided to do a side-by-side tasting of their $45 a bottle Pinot Noir - Kiana. We tasted it with the Woodworth Vineyards Pinot Noir we are featuring in our first Mood Wine Club for $33 a bottle...
They are both beautiful wines!
The Willakenzie is structured, big, with lots of classic Pinot Noir fruit characteristics (cherries, currants, spice), it also has an interesting graphite expression in the mid-palate. This is not uncommon in Burgundian style Pinots where the earth is as important as the fruit. The finish is nice but could be a tad smoother. Although with decanting the finish rounds out nicely.
The Woodworth is every bit as classic in its Burgundian profile with a nose that is more pronounced then the WillaKenzie. The Woodworth also explodes with cherries, and currants and more spice than the WillaKenzie, but it also has the added layers of earth that I always look for in a great Pinot. You can smell the wet earth and mushrooms dancing with the fruit and spice on the nose. The finish is smooth and lingering and just gets better with air and a little time.
All in all, these are both GREAT wines, but for the value, Woodworth wins. Plus the Woodworth has scored big in the international Pinot Shoot Out two years in a row... first year it took Gold and this year Silver. It beat out hundreds of other Pinot Noirs from around the world. Not sure if WillaKenzie was in the competition, but if it was, it came in behind Woodworth! As a matter of fact, wine writers in San Francisco were astounded that a Southern California Estate Winery took gold with 94 points... they dubbed it the "Southern California Bottle Shock Moment".
Hope this piques your interest in this wine. It is one of the Three Big Reds in our first Mood Wine Club package. We will be pouring it in our tasting on March 15th at the Loft, and will have it for sale on the Mood Wine Shopping cart very soon!
Oh, and here's one more picture, just because I think it's AMAZING...
Looking forward to SEEING YOU ON MARCH 15TH AT THE LOFT!!!
