DAY THREE - Countdown to MOOD MADNESS...

Last week I introduced you to one of the three BIG REDS in our first Mood Wine Club - Woodworth Vineyards 2009 Pinot Noir. You can read about this wine by clicking the link.

Today I want to introduce you to BIG RED number two: Fazeli Cellars 2008 Yalda....
Fazeli Cellars Original 2006 Yalda
The 2008 vintage of this Rhone blend (Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre) is the third vintage for this amazing new winery. Since its release this big bold wine has won numerous awards, including two double golds, a gold, and 88 points in Wine Enthusiast Magazine. To me what makes this wine amazing is the blend. It's basically a blend of the classic Chateauneuf du Pape (try remembering how to spell that! PHEW).

The Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the most historic wines of Europe. Originally named due to the pope residing in his summer home (castle) in the area. The blend can have up to twelve red and one white varieties in it. Most have at least the three in this blend and many a few more... seldom do you see one with all thirteen. I'll share more about this at the event.

This wine has the swirling nuances of these three grapes.. the smokiness of the syrah, along with dark berries, and leather. But it's balanced by the bright fruit, and black cherries common in the Grenache, and the Mourvedre offers the bridge between the two by bringing more berries and helping to soften and harmonize the blend. You could say this wine is a big fat BERRY JUBILEE wrapped in smokey leathery goodness!

Oh, and Jasmine Gioia of Fazeli Cellars will be at the LOFT on Thursday...
